It's week 2 in Photo Academy and we're continuing to learn about photo composition and design. On Monday we had a lesson about Line and started an ABC Photo project. Students looked for 'line' in different areas around our classroom, in the building and outside - that would make the letters of their name. Their challenge was to not 'build' the letter with objects, but rather change what was in the 'frame' of their camera to create the line. (Some examples will be posted soon!) Students continued to work on their photo journals in book creator. **Links to student books will be posted by Wednesday morning. Please keep in mind the students will be continuing to work on their journals so more details will be added each day until our class is over. On Tuesday we had a lesson about Texture and Pattern. Students learned about how to find places where changing a perspective or changing what's in the frame can highlight the 'texture' of an object. Patterns, created by some kind of repetition, can also make a picture more interesting. Students will apply these elements and lessons on our field trip on Thursday. Our second half of Tuesday we had a special guest - Skye Devoe - a photographer from the Owatonna area who specializes in taking portraits around southern Minnesota. Check out her website to view her work: https://www.skyesthelimitphotography.com Tomorrow we have a mini field trip to Makally Photography Studio in Maple Grove, MN! Jodi Elkins is the photographer and studio owner and will show us how she uses her studio when she takes pictures. It should be a fun morning! https://www.skyesthelimitphotography.com/
We had such a great first week together! On Day 3 we had our first field trip day. We started out at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. We always head straight for the current photography exhibit - and while it was smaller than usual, it included some very unique photography by Sara VanDerBeek (https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/sara-vanderbeek/). After spending some time in the Harrison Photography Gallery, students explored other parts of the museum and found some opportunities to take photos as well. Day 4 we were back in our classroom. We continued our photo journal project, including a new page about our 'Top 10 About Me' list. We also had a new lesson about photo composition. Students learned how perspective can truly set a photo apart from other photos. They learned about different types of perspective - Linear, Diminishing Size, Height, Aerial, Overlap - and then had a photo assignment to take at least 5 pictures that were examples of one or more types. These pictures will become part of their final project displayed at Open House. It was another great day in our 'studio'! Today students started by learning about Book Creator. We'll be using this program to create photo journals of our time during Summer Academy. Students will be creating a page almost every day reflecting on lessons and uploading their photographs. A link to their journals will be posted soon!
